The term “listserv” is usually used as a synonym for “mailing list” although it is actually the software that allows a computer to create and manage mailing lists. LISTSERV® is a registered trademark licensed to L-Soft International, Inc.
A mailing list is a list of people's names and e-mail addresses that is used to send certain messages or announcements to many people at once. These people are expected to have a common interest that is served by the mailing list. Each list is managed by a list owner who sets policies as to who can join (subscribe to) the list, who can send messages (post) to the list, whether the messages are moderated, and the general theme of discussion for the list.
The Communicators Forum mailing list provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information among Communicators Forum members, fostering our professional development and contributing to our sense of community. Only Communicators Forum members can join the mailing list.
When you join the Forum, you are automatically added to the Forum mailing list with the e-mail address you provided on your membership form. If you try to send a message to the mailing list from another e-mail address, the system will not recognize you as a member of the list and will bounce your message back to you. Send a message to Lani at payet003@umn.edu if your e-mail address has changed.
To unsubscribe, send a message to listserv@lists.umn.edu with the words
SIGNOFF FORUM-C
in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank and turn off your signature. This message must be sent from the same e-mail address you used in subscribing to the list (or the e-mail address you used on your membership registration form).
Once you unsubscribe from the list, you can resubscribe by sending a request to Lani at payet003@umn.edu
To send (post) a message to the list, e-mail it to FORUM-C@lists.umn.edu. This is called “sending mail to the list” because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all of the people subscribed. After you send the message, you will receive an e-mail asking for confirmation. Your message will not be sent to the list until you respond to the confirmation e-mail. If you decide that you do not want the message to go to the list, simply disregard or delete the confirmation mail.
Postings to mailing list are NOT restricted to official Forum business. You may use the mailing list to seek the professional advice of fellow members or pose a communications-related question. In the past, for example, members have used the mailing list to debate everything from serial commas to the merits of various software packages. Although such discussions may not be of interest to everyone on the mailing list, they provide valuable opportunities for us to draw upon the experiences and expertise of fellow members.
You may also use the mailing list to announce an event or opportunity of interest to the membership. Job postings, event announcements, and other items of interest need not be University-related. Advertisements or messages promoting a company, service, or commercial product are strongly discouraged unless they are solicited through the list by a Forum member who specifically asks other members for recommendations for companies, services, or products of a particular nature. In such cases, recommendations should be sent directly to the person who made the inquiry.
DO NOT use the “reply” button in your e-mail program to reply to posting to the list UNLESS you want the whole list to receive your reply. To send a private response to an individual member, create a new message to that person or use the “forward” option and type his or her address in the “TO:” line.
The mailing list is a members-only benefit, and information posted to it is for the exclusive use of Forum members UNLESS the posting member specifically grants permission for further distribution.
No. The mailing list is a Communicators Forum members-only benefit.
Forum members are added to the mailing list using the e-mail address on their membership or conference registration forms. If you try to send a message to the mailing list from another e-mail address, the system will not recognize you as a member of the list and will bounce your message back to you. Contact Lani at payet003@umn.edu to change your e-mail address.
All mailing lists are set up with default subscriber options -- one of which is that subscribers to a list do not receive copies of their own postings. If you wish to receive copies of your own messages to the list, send a message to listserv@lists.umn.edu with the words
SET FORUM-C REPRO
in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank and turn off your signature. This message must be sent from the same e-mail address you used in subscribing to the list.
If you wish instead to receive a message acknowledging your post, send a message to listserv@lists.umn.edu with the words
SET FORUM-C ACK
in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank and turn off your signature. Again, this message must be sent from the same e-mail address you used in subscribing to the list.
To turn off these features, send a message to listserv@lists.umn.edu with the words
SET FORUM-C NOACK
or
SET FORUM-C NOREPRO
in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank and turn off your signature. Again, this message must be sent from the same e-mail address you used in subscribing to the list.
Rather than receiving each individual message, you can enable the digest option to receive only one message each day that contains all of the messages sent to the list that day. To do so, send a message to listserv@lists.umn.edu with the words
SET FORUM-C DIGEST
in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank and turn off your signature. This message must be sent from the same e-mail address you used in subscribing to the list.
To turn off this function, send a message to listserv@lists.umn.edu with the words
SET FORUM-C NODIGEST
in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank and turn off your signature. This message must be sent from the same e-mail address you used in subscribing to the list.
Contributions to the Communicators Forum mailing list are automatically archived. You can get a list of available archive files by sending a message to listserv@lists.umn.edu with the words
INDEX FORUM-C
in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank and turn off your signature. This message must be sent from the same e-mail address you used in subscribing to the list.
Once you have reviewed the index, you can order a specific file by sending a message to listserv@lists.umn.edu with the words
GET FORUM-C LOGxxxx (where xxxx is the log number)
in the body of the message. Leave the subject line blank and turn off your signature. This message must be sent from the same e-mail address you used in subscribing to the list.
